Diana Nyad – Remembering Her Record-Breaking Swim

On September 2, 2013, Diana Nyad completed her record-breaking 100.86-mile, 52-hour 54-minute swim from Cuba to Key West, Florida. Aesthetic Prosthetics® played a role in her journey by designing and creating a custom-made silicone mask to protect her from deadly box jellyfish stings during her swim. It feels like yesterday and it’s hard to believe so much time has passed, yet we remain in awe of her achievement and are still so proud to have been involved!

This client takes pride in looking feminine in her male-dominated workplace. These sparkling shell acrylic tips are her signature color. This type of a request was a first for us and a fun challenge. She brought in the matching acrylic powder and it worked out great – happy nails!

Getting Pumped Again in Heels

Wearing Sandals Again? No Problem

Summer in Southern California means serious heat! In the midst of a heat wave, we just got a call from this client who has been wearing his prosthetic toe for a couple of months. He told us he is so grateful that his prosthesis allows him wear sandals on hot days without feeling self-conscious at all. We are always so happy to hear from our clients and to know that our work helps people regain normalcy and peace in their daily lives.

A Rewarding Holiday from Holland

This woman has never been able to wear open-toed shoes as she was born with under developed toes. She found Aesthetic Prosthetics on the internet and traveled with her family all the way from Holland to our office in Pasadena, California for two weeks to have these prosthetic toes made. As many of our out of the area clients do, they made a vacation out of it. Her eagerness and positive attitude as well as the support of her partner were infectious and they were a joy to work with. We are honored to have been able to make prosthetics for her. Here she is trying on her new prosthetics and wearing them with sandals!

Utility Fingers Do The Job

This client had a need for utility fingers at work and for the gym as well as a realistic restoration for times when he wished for increased hand function and realism for privacy. Utility fingers are made of a tougher, harder material compared to our realistic pieces and look more like a modified glove than a prosthesis to the casual observer.

Guarding Against Sport Related Face/Nose Damage

With a staff comprised of Anaplastologists, Artists and a Prosthetist/Orthotist, our company has a very unique skill set. Sometimes, we are asked to create things we never considered. This is one of those instances which has shown us that there is a largely unmet need among injured athletes. Competitors who have suffered a broken nose or are in need of a Rhinoplasty/Septoplasty in order to improve their breathing and performance in the field or on the court need something to protect their nose during the months long healing process. There are generic masks available but, they aren’t very effective and inhibit a player’s vision.

A high school soccer star needed to have surgery to repair a broken nose but, her healing time overlapped with scouting season, which was crucial to her future as a college player. Her surgeon gave her clearance to return to playing with a face guard but the generic version did not fit. Here she is, back to the sport she loves best with her surgical site protected.

Soon after we finished her plastic mask, another soccer player with the same issue saw her playing with the mask on, and came to us to get a carbon fiber version, also pictured below.

Our first face mask client’s surgeon was very impressed with the mask and he even posted about it on Instagram!

No Nail? No Problem

This client lost her left great toenail as a child resulting in a shortened toe that made her feel self conscious in some shoes. She also had nerve discomfort when the scar was touched. Usually we make our prosthetic nails out of acrylic, which allows the nails to be painted. In this case, there was not enough space for an acrylic nail to be deeply embedded. The nail on the prosthesis pictured is soft and completely made of silicone, yet durable. Her prosthesis acts as a compliant, protective sleeve to soothe the nerve irritation, restore form and length, and give her confidence to wear shoes she likes without worrying about her amputation.
