Ancient Prosthesis Discovered in Egypt — Archeologists working in a burial chamber in the Sheikh ´Abd El-Qurna necropolis west of Luxor, Egypt, came upon an aesthetically well-crafted prosthetic big toe. Archaeologists found the fitted toe on the remains of a female in 2000. Experts believe that the female was the daughter of an Egyptian priest.

Archaeologists named the prosthetic toe “The Cairo Toe” or “The Greville Chester Great Toe.” According to experts, the surprisingly lifelike toe dates back to around 3,000 years ago. The ancient prosthesis would have allowed someone who wanted to maintain an aesthetic appearance while still being mobile to wear sandals. Researchers suggest that the toe underwent several refittings.
